Leventini
Club Lambs started as a 4H project in 1974.
Through the 1970's and 1980's, we built a flock or registered
Hampshire sheep based upon bloodlines from such breeders as Ronald
Hogg, Jack Matthews and Leonard Bianchi. We also had a few Suffolk
ewes which were based upon Heupel and Fairview Farms breeding
programs. We built our breeding program by keeping a select number
of females each year, generally mid-sized ewes that excelled in
structural correctness, femininity and muscle. |
|
In
the late 80's and early 90's, we started to really focus on club
lambs. On the Hampshire side, we purchased "Smokey" at the 1991, Top
of the Rockies. This Cabaniss bred ram (a 420 son) is the basis for
our ewe flock through the mid 90's. His females are stout, big
topped and excellent mothers. Although "Smokey" sired his share of
champion show lambs, his legacy is his females. In 1996, we
purchased, in partnership with Leonard Bianchi, another Cabaniss ram
at the 1996 Midwest Stud Ram Sale. "Big Time" (a "2" son on a "Time"
daughter) was the second high selling ram at the sale at $5,100. We
immediately bred "Big Time" to all our "Smokey" daughters and the
results have been tremendous. His females are feminine and extremely
straight with plenty of muscle. However, his sons have excelled as
well. At the 1998 Top of the Rockies, "Big Time" sired the high
selling ram at $5000. Then again in 1999, "Big Time" sons were the
Champion and Reserve Champion Hampshire rams at the Top of the
Rockies. "Big Time" also sired the high selling Hampshire Yearling
ram at Sedalia for Leonard Bianchi in 1999. "Big Time" has also had
his share of success in the show ring. |
|
On
the Suffolk side, we continue to keep a few select females. In the
early 90's, we purchased a couple key sires from Dynamite Farms. These
rams added extra muscle and statement, but we really focus on keeping
our females feminine and extended, as well as expressively muscled. |
|
Heading
into the year 2004, Leventini-bred rams are leading the way. "TR" is
our lead stud ram. He is a "Big Time" son on a "Smokey" daughter. He
is RR NN, strikingly high-headed and surprisingly thick topped. His
lambs have been extremely competitive on the jackpot circuit.
Sharing the starting line-up with "TR" is our Cabaniss 118 son
"Armani". His daughters are "keepers". Armani lambs have a great
rack and level hip. Armani puts a great rib shape and plenty of
muscle in his lambs when bred to our broad ewes. All of our rams in
our battery have been genetically tested and are "spider free". |
|
We
are extremely selective with our replacement rams and ewes. The result
is rapid and consistent genetic improvement for not only our flock but
for those who select our sheep as additions to their programs. |
|
In 2000
we showed and sold at the Midwest Stud Ram Show and Sale for the
first time. A "Big Time" ram lamb was National Champion Hampshire
Wether Sire and went on to become Reserve Supreme Champion Ram. |
